09 - 1½ cups unsalted butter, softened
10 - 5 cups powdered sugar, sifted
11 - ¼ cup whole milk
12 - 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
13 - Gel food coloring: black, navy blue, purple, pink, and teal

→ For Decoration

14 - Edible gold and silver star sprinkles
15 - Edible glitter or luster dust
16 - White gel food coloring for stars and swirls

# Directions:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
02 - In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract.
03 - In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
04 - Add dry ingredients to wet mixture in three parts, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with flour. Mix until just combined.
05 - Divide batter evenly among prepared pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
06 - Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
07 - Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, then milk and vanilla. Beat until fluffy and smooth.
08 - Divide buttercream into four or five bowls. Tint each with a different galaxy color using gel food coloring: black, navy blue, purple, pink, and teal.
09 - Place random spoonfuls of each colored buttercream onto plastic wrap. Roll up to form a log. Snip one end and transfer to piping bag fitted with large round tip.
10 - Place first cake layer on serving plate. Spread thin layer of galaxy buttercream. Repeat with remaining layers.
11 - Apply generous crumb coat over entire cake. Chill for 20 minutes.
12 - Pipe and spread galaxy buttercream over cake, swirling gently with offset spatula to create marbled galaxy effect.
13 - Use white gel food coloring and food-safe paintbrush or splatter tool to flick stars across cake surface.
14 - Decorate with edible gold and silver star sprinkles and sprinkle edible glitter or luster dust over entire cake.
15 - Add graduation cap cake topper for festive finishing touch.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • It looks absolutely show-stopping but doesn't require fancy cake decorating skills, just a willingness to embrace the chaos of marbled colors.
  • The vanilla cake is genuinely delicious—moist, tender, and the kind of base that lets your decorating shine without overshadowing the flavor.
  • Every person at the party will ask how you made it, and you'll get to explain the galaxy buttercream trick that makes it seem way harder than it is.
02 -
  • Room temperature ingredients are non-negotiable—cold butter won't cream, cold eggs won't incorporate smoothly, and your cake will suffer for it.
  • The marbled buttercream log is the secret weapon; it eliminates the need for multiple piping bags and creates a naturally gorgeous galaxy effect that looks like you spent hours perfecting it.
  • Don't skip the crumb coat and chill step—it keeps crumbs from showing through and gives your final frosting layer a smooth, professional-looking canvas.
03 -
  • If your galaxy buttercream looks too marbled or muddy after you mix it, you can always divide it again and start fresh with your piping bag—there's no penalty for trying twice.
  • Paint the stars with white gel food coloring mixed with just a drop of water; if it gets too thin, it won't show up, but if it's too thick, it won't brush smoothly.
  • Set a phone timer when you put the cakes in the oven so you don't forget about them—I've learned this the hard way more than once.
